This is a .50 cal. The projectile makes the round trip b/t/w the gun, a steel target 1000 meters downrange, and the shooter's ear protection. Out and back, and if it'd been an inch to the right homeboy would be dead or breathing out of a tube.
Danger close with the .50 cal is anywhere within earshot - and some places out of earshot. Pretty hella sick invention for a pacifist mormon dude.
Ma Deuce. A beautiful piece of engineering. It's a brutally simple and heavy set of components, but once you've put them together, and set the "headspace and timing," it's a precision instrument. Fired from atop an M1A1 main battle tank at night, with plenty of tracers, and the occasional punctuating burst from the main gun, it's capable of producing otherworldly beauty. Laser-like streaks of light, followed by bursting, tumbling ricochets. And the sound? That's what a proper machine gun should sound like, son.
If you're offered the opportunity to fire one, don't turn it down. ...unless you're shooting at pieces of iron 100 meters down range with those guys.
Yeah, I've shot Ma Deuce. She's nice. Probably my favorite or second favorite MG, truth be told. The MG-1 is the other one that's high on my list. It's got a fairly nasty pedigree as well, and it feels very "machine-gunny" and sort of raw for an medium MG, it's a little difficult to handle and tempermental.
BTW, I am pretty sure that metal target was at 1km. Note the lag time between shot, and de-earmuffing.
