National Ride of Silence

Just a reminder.

The National Ride of Silence = our local part of it anyhow - is tomorrow night. If you missed the chance to register on BikeReg, you can show up at Hains Point and register at 6:30 tomorrow night. It's about a 10 mile ride, out of the park, up to the Capitol and back, 12 MPH, silent protest and demand we be treated better. Around 80 people pre-registered so I'd expect maybe twice that number to show. It's supposed to be sunny and clear tomorrow afternoon following overnight rain, so you can get a hard training ride in, and then do this Ride from Hains afterward.

I'm not a protest guy and don't think too highly of Critical Ass because of the clown antics, and I'm not a protest guy generally, but I think it's important to support the cause here. I know plenty of people who have been hit and permanently messed up as a result, and I stare at a ghost bike on the curb outside my building three or four times every day. It's time to step up and ask for accommodation for cyclists, and ask that cops and prosecutors take it seriously when riders are run down.

Here in DulMn, we have a lot of bike route signs on our roads, but I see very few bikers on them. Reason? They would make good training rides for the Schlecks and Contador. The local route behind my house is a twisting, thigh searing climb featuring 2 absolute walls. Kinda defeats the purpose of a bike route.

No it doesn't.

Well, okay. Yes it does if you aren't a racer or very hardcore rec rider. No way in hell is Granny getting up that hill... well, unless she has a granny gear.

FWIW, I like Duluth. In the summer, primarily, but it's still a likeable town. Rode a motorcycle to / through there a few times, and enjoyed the scenery and terrain. Never thought about riding a bike bike there... come to think of it, yeah, it'd hurt.

I'm not really lobbying for flat roads. I'll settle for prosecutors and cops enforcing the laws when a driver runs one of us down...

Funny you should mention summer. We had a milder winter than you guys did in D.C. El Nino from what I hear. But, as with all good things, we will pay.

And yes, granny gear is a necessity if you aren't razor thin. The compact crank is a blessing from the gods.
