Rough day at the Giro d'Italia yesterday, with lots of bodies hitting the deck. Daniele Benatti won the bunch sprint at the end of a wild stage, and Franco Pellizoti maintained the Maglia Rosa, while Christian VandeVelde (U.S.A.... U.S.A....) held on to second place for another day. Slipstream's Magnus Backstedt and Danny Pate both hit the deck, and CSC lost a couple riders at one go, including Brad McGee and Stuart O'Grady, both of whom broke collarbones in the same crash. Filthy luck if you ask me, or perhaps filthy roads, but typical of the old school brutality that the Giro throws at the riders on a daily basis. A crank might argue in disgust, "you wouldn't see the TdF racing on vile roads like that," while a purist would argue in reverent tones, "you would never see the TdF permitting racing on vile roads like that."
Brad McGee faces East towards Milan for his (5 times daily) ritual prayer, a true Masilem.
