The Return of Spring

Note to self: Smiling at the pretty girls is fun on the first warm day of spring, but the first warm day of spring is also when all the gnats, mosquitoes and beetles hatch.

The Capital Crescent is particularly bad. A Downhill MTB helmet will not help you here.

If you find your teeth infested with bugs, have a friend hold your mouth open and chew on a wooden stick. That always helps.

Don't laugh. There are people in my family who actually have a set of teeth that look like that.

Um, the fish, not the one with the photoshopped beetles.

I was riding yesterday and a big ass bug hit me on the mouth so hard I screamed. Luckily it didn't go in my mouth.

I ate my first bug on Tuesday afternoon. But it wasn't the spring issue.

Here in Oz it's getting darker earlier and an afternoon ride that was seering heat and blinding light a month ago is a little crisp and nudging dusk. When the bugs come out. And get eaten. By me. Sucking big lung fulls of air during a threshold effort on a 2 mile false flat.
